I acted as the Auditor of University of Galway’s DramSoc from 2022-2023. During my time as auditor, the society hosted 104 events, produced 20 productions and had 3000 members. During my time on committee, I introduced a new festival entitled the Work In Progress Festival. The festival was dedicated to facilitating emerging playwrights and the development of original writing through workshops, social events and a staged reading showcase. We also organized a Theatre Week Festival where we held 10 events and showcased 5 original one acts. I also assisted the society in winning Best Promotional Campaign for Mr Burns (A Post Electric Play) as well as Best Society at the University of Galway 2023 Society Awards. In 2020 I joined the University of Galway’s DramSoc Committee as the New Member’s Representative. With this role, I directed the Fresher’s Showcase entitled Monologues Amongst Mayhem and assisted new members in feeling comfortable and confident within the society. In 2021, I was re-elected onto the committee as the Inclusivity Officer. Duke is a spliff-smoking (for medicinal reasons you understand), bike-riding, heavy-metal- and horror-movie-loving, pizza-eating widower who has brought up Duck since the death of her mum in a crash. The two of them are just about surviving when one morning the Duke wakes up blind and the Duck hears Social Services are coming to take her away. Although the world Georgi Gospodinov creates can be a bit bizarre and strange at times; I actually found it to be very familiar. After recently needing to quarantine over the past year and a half, I think we all can relate to the anxiety and social separation presented in the play. Many of the characters feel unnoticeable and lonely and this can lead to acts of violence, paranoia, and a dependency on media. I believe this play shows us what our society could become if we don’t learn how to connect and care for one another without fear. One of the ways Georgi shows us how to accomplish this is through accessing our inner child. Children do not hesitate to observe, love and dream. This is what we need to avoid the apocalypse. As a community, we need to learn how to escape our anxieties and individualistic tendencies by remembering what we are here for; to learn, share and grow as a community. My advice for you; is to carry this mentality with you when watching the show. Rather than trying to make sense of the plot, symbols and characters; simply try to connect with them. Then, you can go home and try to make sense of all the beautiful complexities within this play. But for now, just try to connect.
